E3 is heavily suggested to be cancelled this year, but is it that big of a deal really?

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2020 will be cancelled according to many sources and that would mean their record of 25 consecutive running events turned to ash. Although sad in a more romantic and nostalgic way is it that really that big of a deal in today's heavily online focused gaming industry? Here are me reasoning behind why this may actually be a good thing. Or at the least a very natural thing.

Let's start off by just stating the facts for anyone not aware of what E3 actually is. E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo and has been a yearly concurring event showcasing what's next in the gaming industry. The first E3 event was held back in 1995 and has been held by the ESA or Entertainment Software Association ever since.

The future is digital

E3 has been sort of a white knight fighting the darkness that is the internet offering people a hands on experience as long as you are physically there. This is very much appreciated by the kind of people that can actually get there themselves but for the vast majority of gamers worldwide it's all about the online content such as the actual press conferences from the big guns. I get it, to actually be there must be a great experience all by itself I'm sure, but since I´ve never went there by myself I don´t know.

So it would be perfectly fair for anyone saying that I don't get it, I would totally understand that.

But what I understand is the other side, the side that has been sitting by a screen following every announcement during every conference, yelling with a mouth full of different snacks and with coffee mixed with monster energy. I get that. I have lived that life for the last eight E3s for crying out loud.

But with all this said I really do believe this is the way to go. Nintendo has already shown us how incredibly successful you can run your own Stream just announcing and focusing on the things YOU want, Sony jumped the ship back in 2018 and EA has been experimenting by themselves also which has left Microsoft pretty much running the show all by themselves. And, how much of a Xbox fan you are, I´m sure you understand that this was not supposed to last for a very long time.

E3 needs a strong Nintendo presence, E3 need a strong Sony presence and Microsoft needs them both just as MR. Phil Spencer has already stated. Without these three competitors giving their all to win the race, it was just a matter of time before E3 was cancelled. And whether it will ever return, well we'll just have to sit and wait for the official statement.
